**Summary**



PenFed is hiring an Engineer III, IT Database Administrator at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. The primary purpose of this job is to lead database administration services for enterprise SQL Server databases. This position will be responsible for, but are not limited to, planning, design, and development throughout project lifecycle along with operational support and maintenance for test, DR and production systems with an emphasis within the domain of SQL tuning and optimization.



**Essential Functions**

+ Responsible for leading database-related initiatives.

+ Responsible for stability, integrity and efficiency of enterprise databases.

+ Install, configure, and administer database software within a multi database client/server

+ environment.

+ Provide on-site and on-call support of Database Platforms (24x7x365).

+ Perform application deployments, upgrades and patch planning.

+ Participate in troubleshooting and recovering applications.

+ Monitor tickets and requisitions and ensure work is performed on time and accurately

+ Responsible for database recovery methodologies and implementation.

+ Establish and may administer database security.

+ Plan and implement database disaster recovery.

+ Act as Technical Reference User for other assigned applications, frequently working with

+ Business Reference User(s) to understand how applications are used at the company.

+ Monitor and optimize database performance.

+ Create and/or tune complex queries.

+ Work closely with application teams to provide input and oversight responsibility for the

+ logical and physical database design.

+ Review and assess the impact of database design changes prior to their implementation.

+ Provide technical expertise in the design and development of complex SQL.

+ Perform long-term strategic planning for: database growth, database upgrades, operating

+ system upgrades, hardware capacity, and hardware migrations.

+ May participate in the research, evaluation, and purchase of future database platforms/tools.

+ Work closely with application teams and deployment teams to provide integrated planning for

+ operating system upgrades, database upgrades, applications upgrades, and hardware migrations.

+ Exposure to other development languages/environments including ASP, JavaScript, VBScript XML, as well as .NET technologies such as ASP.NET, VB.NET and Visual Studio.NET

+ Accountable for providing escalation support to troubleshoot and maintain production infrastructure and to resolve production issues and outages as needed.

+ Maintain proper documentation including configuration specifics and procedures, for implementation and ongoing operation/maintenance of infrastructure solutions.

+ Interact with other engineers and management to identify areas of improvement for operational efficiency.

+ Work closely with technical and non-technical personnel and management within and across PenFed departments and vendors.

+ Participate in the planning and design of an enterprise Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan.

+ Comply with Incident Management and Change Management procedures and reporting practices.

+ Maintain up-to-date detailed knowledge of the IT industry as it relates to the technologies identified as primary responsibilities including awareness of new or revised solutions and improved processes.

+ Assist junior and subordinate staff in researching technical problems and complex designs in order to develop staff capabilities.

+ Participate in on-call 24x7 support as needed in the event of system outage or failure.



**Education and Experience**



Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.



+ Bachelor's Degree in related field is required.

+ In lieu of a degree, combination of education and a minimum of ten (10) years of related work experience is required that provides the necessary skills and knowledge to perform all the essential job functions.

+ Minimum of four (4) years of experience related to SQL server database administration is required.

+ Strong understanding of all components of MS SQL Server including Management Studio, SQL Profiler, SSIS, Reporting Services, and clustering. Strong understanding of interaction between Windows and SQL Server.

+ Expert knowledge of MS SQL Server database administration at the design, operational, and system levels.

+ Thorough knowledge of and experience with database security, backup, recovery and archiving. Demonstrated project management skills.

+ Experienced in MS SQL Server 2008 with working knowledge of MS SQL Server 2012.

+ Working knowledge of client/server environment including Windows Server 2008 and 2012, all windows desktop operating systems, networking and knowledge of TCP/IP, is preferred.

+ Strong understanding of System design and integration with a thorough familiarity with multi-tiered application architecture and public, private, and hybrid cloud technologies.

+ Strong interpersonal, problem solving and multi-tasking skills desired.

+ Must be able to present recommendations for user approval at formal reviews.

+ Strong problem solving and analytic skills.

+ Strong communication, documentation, and time management skills.



**Supervisory Responsibility**



This position will not directly supervise employees.



**Licenses and Certifications**



Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) certification preferred.



**Work Environment**



While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.



*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*



**Travel**



Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
